Conglomerate Gully
A short drive out of Riddells Creek, this circuit walk gives you a complete break from the rest of the world
Learning how to look closely in the bush
We went looking for orchids, on our regular first of the month Sunday. Andrew Dilley has been our guide for the last year. His GPS device holds all the records of orchids ever found in Barrm Birrm, where and when, and that gives us a clue as to where to head and what to look for.
Wildflowers and Weeds
Once a month, the fourth Saturday of each month in winter, and the fourth Wednesday evening of summer, we walk in Barrm Birrm. People join us to enjoy what's out, to knock off some of the weeds, and to be with people who like being out in the bush.
Trespassing
I got excited when the Victorian Environmental Friends Network told me that the Walks Victoria site would let anyone put up walks in their locality. Know a good place to walk? Then tell others about it. Put it on the map, leave notes. Walkers of the world unite.
What a simple way, I thought, to tell people where to walk in Barrm Birrm.
The show rolls on
The chocolate lilies that came on strong in Barrm Birrm in November are passing, but hot on their heels is the Tall Fringe-lily, both lilies and at a casual glance, a similar shade and shape. However, up close the fringe lily cannot be mistaken for anything else. A flower as extravagant as the prettiest umbrella at a French Impressionist's garden party.
Let yourself be carried along by the seasons
One of the delights of gardening is following what is coming into bud, then into bloom, then peaking and giving up its blooms and going to fruit. It's a tremendous privilege to be able to watch the seasons run their course, and it's the same in the bush.
Three walks in Barrm Birrm
If you walk in Barrm Birrm, up the hill there where Gap Road turns to gravel, you probably have your favourite walk already, but here are three walks to explore more of this mysterious hillside.
Late Spring in Barrm Birrm
With the wet Spring, the wildflowers are exceptional. A regular walk through the lower slopes of Barrm Birrm will give you a ringside seat as the season changes.
