Thelymitra sp. (Sun Orchid). Family: Orchidaceae (p.1).
Mid-late Spring. This is probably a plant in the Thelymitra nuda-pauciflora
complex. Ready to flower in Oct-Nov 2008 but flowers never opened, possibly
suggesting it is Thelymitra pauciflora (which opens only on very hot, humid days
- NB. Spring 2008 was extremely dry and very cool). Plants in this complex
are known to self-pollinate which we assume this is what happened in 2008.
Plants with stem and leaf to about 20cm long. Of the few plants found, all
had reddish stems. The Thelymitra pauciflora flowers below were photographed
at Macedon Cemetery on November 12, 2008.
